The Stark County Young Republicans (SCYR) hosted a very successful, state-wide convention this past weekend with over 150 Young Republicans in attendance at the McKinley Grand Hotel.
The convention kicked off Friday evening with a political comedy show featuring comedians Mike Polk, Rob Snow, Mike Conley, and Mike Head of the Canton Comedy Series. After the comedy show, participants enjoyed a jazz session for the remainder of the evening.
The convention opened Saturday morning with the presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop #1016, Pledge of Allegiance by Austin Owens, National Anthem by Brant Luther, and the invocation by Pastor Clifton Cox. Convention attendees were welcomed by Monique Cox-Moore (President SCYR), Jeff Matthews (Stark County Republican Chairman), Ryan Johnson (Ohio Young Republican Chairman), and Lisa Stickans (National Young Republican Chairwoman).
Throughout the day candidate speeches were given by Justice Maureen O’Conner (Candidate for Chief Justice), Justice Julie Edwards (Candidate for 5th District Court of Appeals), Tom Ganley (Candidate for U.S. Congress OH-13), Jim Renacci (Candidate for U.S. Congress OH-16), and Josh Mandel (Candidate Ohio State Treasurer). Rob Portman (Candidate for U.S. Senator) joined the group by phone as did John Kasich (Candidate for Ohio Governor) by video.

The conference then moved to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the Young Republican Chair Reunion. The social was hosted by pro football players Derek and Dustin Fox with special guests Congressman Ralph Regula and his wife Mary.
Following the social, the annual Ohio Young Republican Dinner was held at the McKinley Grand with radio personality Scott Draughon as the Master of Ceremonies. The Keynote address was given by Frank LaRose, Candidate for State Senate-27th District. Following his speech several SCYR members spoke including Nicholas J. Owens on “What It Means to be a Young Republican”, Chris Cugini (Plain Local School Board Member) “The 10 Can-Nots”, and Steve Groves “YR Rally to Action”.

At the conclusion of the dinner, a tailgate style after party was held with DJ Magic Mike where all enjoyed music and NFL themed corn hole.
The convention concluded Sunday morning with a breakfast presentation by former Canton Mayor/ current candidate for county commissioner Janet Weir-Creighton titled “From Canton, Ohio to Washington D.C”.
The Stark County Young Republicans next event is a golf outing which will be held Saturday July 24, 2010 at Skyland Pines. The outing is open to the public.
